On the 12th March some of our committee members met with Charlton's Disability Liaison Officer Kishan and Head of Operations Jon to discuss issues affecting disabled fans as well as to discuss the ongoing work of CADSA at The Valley.
Disability Facilities and Match Day Experience
It was recognised that CADSA and CAFC have been working hard to improve disability access at the stadium with commitment and reassurance given to further improvements.
Issues were raised with lift reliability affecting access with is being looked into.
On a positive note, there was also good feedback from disabled fans in regards to car park improvements, as well as stewards recognising regular users and accommodating needs of CADSA members.
Communication and Information Boards
Concerns were raised over the lack of health & safety, evacuation and emergency signage for disabled fans with suggestions discussed for permanent, clear signage in every section to be implemented.
It was therefore proposed for lockable noticeboards at key locations be set up for up-to-date information and communications.
Plans were discussed to install noticeboards near lifts and toilets in all relevant stands, including away sections, so ensure viability and easy access.
Noticeboards to include H&S information, as well as information about CADSA so that all fans know where to go for feedback and support.
Stewarding
CADSA suggested that stewarding be consistent in disabled areas. This would allow stewards to be aware of individual needs and familiarity of issues in specific locations.
This follows ongoing issues with steward knowledge and consistency during larger matches (e.g. Chelsea game), resulting in accessibility challenges when fans were standing in front of disabled areas.
Suggested solutions included having dedicated, trained stewards for disabled sections and blanking off rows in front of wheelchair spaces when the stand is not full.
It was also mentioned that some toilets do not have radar keys or have inappropriate locking mechanisms which has been compounded by delays in repairs in other locations. It was noted that regular stewards would be able to assist with the resolution of these issues as they would be aware of re-occurrences and where to report them.
CAFC agreed that a familiar, well-trained stewarding team would enhance safety as well as the overall experience for disabled fans and will be exploring this further.
Some fans have raised concerns around visibility of stewards and lack of intervention during the home game against Birmingham. This has been passed on to CAFC to review.
It was noted that during some matches non-disabled fans have also used the lift and toilets for convenience, which has caused congestion and is something that may need monitoring by stewards to make sure disabled fans have access.
Social Events
End of season plans were briefly discussed, with CADSA and CAFC to send updates in due course.
Other social events for CADSA members discussed, and further suggestions are to follow.
